If that were true, we should see a downward trend in conflict as humans transitioned from primitive societies with simple technologies toward modern societies with complicated ones. But a recent study suggests otherwise: In fact, there’s some evidence suggesting that increased societal complexity may have led to more conflict instead of less.
While nothing is set in stone just yet the paper is under review I spoke with its lead author Daniel Smith (Ohio State University) about what he thinks really drove human warfare before state government came into existence. Here are his thoughts on. Human Societies Were Complex Long Before They Developed Modern Technology.
What happened to primitive technology The most important thing to understand is that while our ancient ancestors didn’t have technology at all, their social lives were very complex. Humans living during prehistory had complex languages and political relationships with other groups, but they also participated in trade networks and even used currencies to keep track of debts.
So while it’s technically correct to say that pre-state humans didn’t use technology, it doesn’t make sense to think of them as being completely unsophisticated when it comes to organization or interpersonal relationships either.
Warfare Was Often Fought Between Groups with Complex Social Structures Even When They Didn’t Have Modern Technology In a lot of cases, prehistoric warfare were actually fought between groups with fairly complex social structures even if those societies didn’t have modern technology. For example, we know that Neanderthals engaged in intergroup conflict because they buried their dead differently depending on whether or not they belonged to a different group than themselves as evidenced by grave goods.

The only items he has ever bought are simple things like soap, salt and sugar. In addition to making items for his own use, he also makes tools for others as a small business venture that brings in some cash flow.
