Early Life

Ghani was born and raised in Afghanistan, where he also studied. Despite this, he attended at Lake Oswego High School in the United States, where he graduated, after being given the opportunity to engage in a foreign exchange programme. He went on to study cultural anthropology at the American University of Beirut, where he graduated in 1973 with a major in the subject.

After winning a government scholarship, Ghani attended Columbia University in the United States and graduated in 1977. Ghani had intended to return to Afghanistan immediately after finishing his studies, but pro-Soviet troops took power in his homeland, imprisoning the majority of his male family members. This is why Ghani chose to stay at Columbia University, where he earned his Ph.D. in 1983.
