Early life

Larry Elder was born in the United States on April 27, 1952, in Los Angeles, California. He grew up in the Pico-Union and South Central neighbourhoods of Los Angeles. Randolph, Elder’s father, was a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps during WWII. During the second Great Migration, his family relocated to California.

Larry’s father died in 2011, and he was raised mostly by his mother, Viola, and two brothers. During World War II, his mother worked as a clerk for the US Department of War.

He enrolled in Crenshaw High School for his studies, graduating in 1970. He then went to Brown University. In 1974, he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from the University. He graduated from the University of Michigan Law School with a J. D. in 1977.

After graduating, Elder began working at the Cleveland legal firm Squire, Sanders & Dempsey. Laurence A. Elder and Associates, a legal executive search business, was formed by him in 1980.
