He even served in the US Navy Air Corps during WWII. Edwards returned from the service and went on to graduate from Louisiana State University Law Center, where he began his legal career.

Edwin Edwards Net Worth and Career

Edwards first entered politics in 1954, when he ran for the Crowley City Council. He decided to join the Democratic Party. After years of campaigning, Edwards was elected to the Louisiana State Senate in 1964, defeating Bill Cleveland in what was considered a huge upset at the time. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives, representing Louisiana’s 7th congressional district, after serving as a floor leader for two years.

From 1965 to 1972, Edwards was in charge of this role. Edwards went on to become Governor of Louisiana, where he served two terms in a row. He gained a reputation as a flamboyant politician who was recognised for being well-dressed and making one-liners that the audience enjoyed during this time. His popularity as governor developed steadily over time throughout the United States.

Edwards went on to serve two additional terms as governor, the third of which began in 1984. However, accusations surrounding corruption began to cast a pall over his career.

In 1997, he and a former congressman were caught on videotape giving the congressman roughly $20,000 in cash. Things would only become worse over time, as he was found guilty of stealing $845,000 from an entrepreneur who had requested that a juvenile prison be built in La Salle Parish.

Personal Life

Edwards married for the first time in 1949 to Elaine Schwartzenburg, with whom he had four children. After being appointed by Edwards, she even served as the interim U.S. senator. After forty years together, the pair divorced in 1989 after a forty-year marriage.

In 1994, he married Candy Picou. However, Edwards’ imprisonment had a negative impact on their relationship, and they divorced in 2004. His third marriage would be the most well-known, as he married Trina Grimes, a woman about 50 years his junior, and the two even appeared together on the reality show The Governor’s Wife. Edwards died of respiratory problems on July 12, 2021, at the age of 93.
