Early life
Merrick Garland was born in Chicago, Illinois, in the United States on November 13, 1952. He grew raised in the northwestern suburbs of Chicago. His father, Cyril Garland, used to own a small firm named Garland Advertising, and his mother, Shirley, used to serve as the director of volunteer services for Chicago’s Council for Jewish Elderly.
He attended Niles West High School for his formal schooling. In 1970, he was class valedictorian and received his bachelor’s degree. He went on to Harvard University, where he majored in social studies. He had previously aspired to be a physician, but he eventually decided to pursue a career as a lawyer.
He went to Harvard Law School after graduating from Harvard in 1974. He worked as an article editor while attending law school. He graduated from Harvard Law School with a Juris Doctorate in 1977.
