Early life

Merrick Garland was born in Chicago, Illinois, in the United States on November 13, 1952. He grew raised in the northwestern suburbs of Chicago. His father, Cyril Garland, used to own a small firm named Garland Advertising, and his mother, Shirley, used to serve as the director of volunteer services for Chicago’s Council for Jewish Elderly.

He attended Niles West High School for his formal schooling. In 1970, he was class valedictorian and received his bachelor’s degree. He went on to Harvard University, where he majored in social studies. He had previously aspired to be a physician, but he eventually decided to pursue a career as a lawyer.

He went to Harvard Law School after graduating from Harvard in 1974. He worked as an article editor while attending law school. He graduated from Harvard Law School with a Juris Doctorate in 1977.

The Republican Senators voted 76 to 23 to affirm his appointment to the United States Court of Appeals. On February 12, 2013, he assumed the role of Chief Judge of the D.C. Circuit. For seven years, he was the chief judge. On February 11, 2020, his term came to an end.

Joe Biden appointed Garland as United States Attorney General on January 20, 2021, following his victory in the 2020 presidential election. The Senate confirmed him for the office by a vote of 70 to 30. Garland was sworn in on March 11, 2021, by Assistant Attorney General for the Administration Lee Lofthus.
