It was founded in 1837 and is published by Guyana Newspapers Incorporated (GNI) on weekdays and Saturdays. GNI is a subsidiary of Guyana’s government-owned National Communications Network (NCN). The Stabroek News is the oldest newspaper in Guyana. It was first published in 1881 in Georgetown, and is the only surviving English-language newspaper in the region. It was named after George Robert Walpole Stabroek, a 19th-century British Guiana official who was a member of the Legislative Council. It is owned by the Stabroek News Group Limited, which also publishes The Sunday Stabroek newspaper and runs a printing press.
